Have you ever noticed your animal companion falling ill during your most stressful times, or seeming agitated when you’re emotionally overwhelmed? There’s a reason for that, and it runs deeper than most people realize.

In my work as both a veterinarian and an energy healer, I’ve seen time and again how animals absorb and reflect the emotional and energetic states of their human companions. This is especially true for the deeply bonded child substitutes.

Animals, especially dogs, cats, and horses, are exquisitely sensitive to subtle energies. They don’t carry the same layers of mental distraction that humans do, so they can feel what we’re feeling even before we consciously acknowledge it ourselves.

Grief, anger, anxiety, and chronic stress can all ripple outward like waves. Our animal companions feel these waves, and sometimes, they take them on. They may express this absorption through behavior changes (aggression, withdrawal, clinginess), physical symptoms (illnesses with no clear medical cause), or energetic imbalances of their own.

They are, in a very real way, our mirrors, and sometimes, our medicine.

Many animals enter our lives with a soul-level agreement: to help carry our burdens, soften our wounds, and love us unconditionally. This isn’t metaphor, it’s a spiritual reality recognized in many indigenous and shamanic traditions.

When we suffer, they often take on pieces of that suffering to ease our load. They do this not out of obligation, but out of pure love. And while it is beautiful, it also means we must take responsibility for the energy we bring into our homes and relationships.

Signs Your Animal May Be Holding Your Energy

Sudden illness or symptoms during your emotional crisis

Behavioral changes without environmental triggers

Persistent fatigue or restlessness in your animal

Their condition improves when you do

A sense that they are “trying to protect” or “soothe” you energetically

What You Can Do

1. Tend to Your Own Energy First

The best way to help your animal is to help yourself. Ground daily. Meditate. Breathe. Receive your own healing. As you lighten your energetic load, they won’t need to carry it for you.

2. Acknowledge Their Role

Speak to them. Let them know you see their efforts and thank them for their love. You can say something like:

“Thank you for being with me through this. You don’t have to hold this for me anymore. I love you and release you from this burden.”

3. Offer Them Energy Healing

Animals respond beautifully to energy work. Reiki, shamanic healing, and gentle intention-based touch can help clear what they’ve absorbed.

4. Create Energetic Boundaries

Just as we set emotional boundaries in relationships, we can set energetic ones with our animals. Let them know, “I take care of my energy so you don’t have to.”

5. Call in Spiritual Support

Animal spirit allies, ancestors, and plant medicines (such as sage or palo santo used with reverence) can help cleanse your shared energetic space. Always invite these with respect and clear intention.

In Closing

Our animals are not just pets. They are soul companions, guardians, and sometimes even healers in fur and feathers. But they are not meant to carry our burdens forever. Part of the sacred relationship we share with them is the responsibility to honor their well-being as much as they honor ours.

If you sense your animal is holding energy that doesn’t belong to them, or if you’d like to deepen your connection through healing work, I offer intuitive sessions that support both the animal and their human in releasing, rebalancing, and remembering their original harmony.
